Bart Hess. A Hunt for High Tech

Bart Hess (1984) is working on the future. He creates another world, a possible world. A world in which technology melds body and object. In Bart Hess' universe we don't put on our shoes, but shoes have become part of our body. ‘Clothes' become a second skin that lives, breathes, grows and transforms. Hess merges the human with the animal: when we don the materials and applications that Hess has created we are transformed into a new but completely logical creature.

First museum solo

From 17 March 2013 RMT presents A Hunt for High Tech, the first museum solo exhibition by Bart Hess. The work of Hess is on the divide between design, fashion and visual art. He makes material studies, animations and photos in which the relation between man and material, nature and technology are central. Famous is the Slime outfit he created for Lady Gaga, and which moulds itself to the body of the wearer. The exhibition can be seen through 29 September 2013.

The animal

Nature with its structures, textures, inner logic and aesthetic is an important source of inspiration for Hess. That's why stuffed animals and animal paintings from the RMT collection can be seen throughout the exhibition, animals we are familiar with and which have in one way or another influenced the alternative universe of Hess. The stuffed animals in the exhibition are the fruits of collaboration between Natura Docet Wonderryck Twente and TwentseWelle.

Winner of the Profielprijs 2013

The exhibition will be opened on Sunday 17 March at 16.00 hours by trend forecaster and curator Lidewij Edelkoort. Bart Hess will also receive the Profielprijs 2013 during the opening. He is receiving the prize, which is awarded by the Stichting Profiel, for his contribution to textile design in the broadest sense of the word.

About Bart Hess

Bart Hess (Geldrop, 1984) studied at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. With his work he has gained a prominent position in the international and Dutch design world. Lucy McRae, Lady Gaga, Iris van Herpen en Nick Knight are just some of the people he collaborates with. Since the end of 2012 he has been living and working in London.
