In February 2023, suspected neo-Nazis are attacked by several individuals during a neo-Nazi commemorative march in Budapest. What follows is far more than the legal aftermath of these violent attacks. A highly politicized web of court proceedings, state interests and expressions of solidarity emerges.
In the documentary, filmmaker Max Jaromil follows the court proceedings against Maja and Clara, who are accused of violence against neo-Nazis. With Der Budapest Komplex, he raises the question of whether violence can be justified when it is directed against a hateful ideology. And who decides where anti-fascist resistance ends and criminality begins? Der Budapest Komplex tells a story of state repression and the fragility of the rule of law – but also of the power of solidarity and the relentless struggle against the rising tide of neo-Nazism.
Max Jaromil graduated from the AKI art academy in Enschede in 2026 with Der Budapest Komplex. The documentary will be screened during RMTnext on 27 November 2027. The evening is dedicated to the exhibition Democracy NOW?. Following the screening, curator Josien Beltman will join Max Jaromil and the audience for a discussion about the film.
5:00 PM – 10:00 PM | Cocktails & Craft Beer
During this edition, you can once again enjoy a great selection of drinks at the museum café. We'll be mixing classic gin and tonics.
