Gideon van Gameren
AKI Alumni
At first glance, Gideon van Gameren’s paintings appear abstract. But the longer you look, the more recognizable shapes emerge among the colourful fields: a human figure, a lemon, or a welding helmet. Van Gameren deliberately plays with incompleteness. He doesn’t reveal everything, leaving room for the viewer’s imagination. In doing so, he invites you to look more closely and, in a sense, complete the image yourself.
Van Gameren draws inspiration from close to home. An important source of inspiration is the campervan rental business next to his childhood home, where his father and brother regularly work on repairs. These everyday scenes and objects find their way into his paintings. Starting from this familiar environment, he explores how work and private life, domesticity and labour become intertwined.
Gideon van Gameren graduated from the AKI ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design in Enschede in 2025. A year later, he won the Royal Award for Modern Painting, a prestigious prize for young artists in the Netherlands.
Gideon van Gameren’s solo exhibition is the first in Rijksmuseum Twenthe’s new AKI Alumni series. The series provides recently graduated artists from the AKI with a platform to present their work in the museum. At the same time, the exhibition marks the conclusion of Van Gameren’s residency within HeARTfund, a support programme for young artists initiated by Stichting HeArtpool.
AKI Alumni: Gideon van Gameren is on view at Rijksmuseum Twenthe from 9 October 2026 to 24 January 2027.
