From 16 February to 18 May 2025, Rijksmuseum Twenthe presented the first museum solo exhibition of artist Elsbeth Cochius. Cochius (1951) lives and works in Enschede and creates linocuts and screen prints that center on a sense of wonder at nature and its rich variety of forms.
Cochius is fascinated by structures and patterns in nature. Her large-scale linocuts are composed of rhythmic patterns of root systems, tree canopies, and swaying grasses. While many of her works have a wide, landscape-like character, she also enjoys zooming in. In those cases, she depicts details of plants, insects, or lichens that are invisible to the naked eye—revealing exquisite, often surreal structures.
Cochius’s work has previously been shown at prominent printmaking exhibitions both in the Netherlands and abroad. The collection of Rijksmuseum Twenthe includes several of her works, among them pieces from the Wilploo Collection donation.
