In February 2023, suspected neo-Nazis are attacked during a neo-Nazi commemorative march in Budapest. What follows goes far beyond the legal aftermath of the violent attacks. A highly politicised web of court cases, state interests and expressions of solidarity unfolds.
In the documentary, filmmaker Max Jaromil follows the trials of Maja and Clara, who are accused of violence against neo-Nazis. With Der Budapest Komplex, he raises the question of whether violence is justified when directed against a reprehensible ideology. And who decides where anti-fascist resistance ends and criminality begins? Der Budapest Komplex also tells a story of state repression and the vulnerability of the rule of law, but also of the power of solidarity and the struggle against the rise of neo-Nazism.
Max Jaromil graduated from the AKI art academy in Enschede in 2026 with Der Budapest Komplex. The documentary will be screened during RMTnext on 27 November 2027. The evening will centre around the exhibition Democratie NU? (Democracy NOW?). Following the screening, curator Josien Beltman will discuss the film with Max Jaromil and the audience.
