The event consists of three distinct exhibitions and an extensive program of activities. In addition, the museum has invited four contemporary artists to conduct artistic research on issues affecting the rural area of Twente.
The Major Developments of Our Time
By 2035, the population of the Netherlands is expected to reach 19 million. Over the next ten years, we will need to build more than a million homes and reduce our CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030. While we fill our meadows with solar parks, we must also practice more extensive farming and create more space for nature. The tension arising from these developments is closely linked to how we manage our — limited — land.
Many of today’s biggest challenges come together in the countryside, outside the cities. Climate crisis, nitrogen emissions, drought, loss of biodiversity, (sustainable) food production, energy transition, and resource extraction — all these issues manifest their consequences and dilemmas first and foremost in rural areas.
The Future of the Countryside
What does this mean for the countryside? What will the future of our rural areas look like, and which interests should weigh the most? Will we build, farm, or give land back to nature? Or are these interests less contradictory than they seem, allowing us to address all these challenges in a creative and integrated way?
Who Owns the Land?
But wait: the above reflects an instrumental view — the land as a resource we can use to solve our problems. Shouldn’t we first zoom out and consider how we ended up facing all these issues? Hasn’t our anthropocentric approach to the land — viewing humans as the center of existence — caused climate change, excess nitrogen, and polluted soil? Why have we acted as we have for centuries? Because we believe the land belongs to us? But who actually owns the land?
Programma
Met de manifestatie Terra Libera (‘het vrije land’) willen we de hierboven genoemde vragen verder verkennen. In de hoofdtentoonstelling doen we dat door uit te zoomen. Aan de hand van kunstwerken vanaf de late middeleeuwen tot heden wordt getoond hoe we door de eeuwen heen naar het land hebben gekeken en hoe we ons het land hebben eigengemaakt en gecultiveerd. Een tweede tentoonstelling met een focus op mediakunst draait om de specifieke thematiek van grondstoffenwinning. De derde tentoonstelling is een samenwerking met Fotomanifestatie Enschede en toont twee fotoseries rondom grondstofwinning en voedsel.
Met het activiteitenprogramma en het artistiek onderzoek van de kunstenaars brengen we de grote, overkoepelende vragen uit de tentoonstellingen terug naar het hier en nu. Welke specifieke thema’s en ontwikkelingen zien we in Twente? En wat betekenen de uitdagingen in het landelijke gebied voor de mensen die er wonen? Hoe zien zij de toekomst?

Bij de manifestatie is een online publicatie verschenen waarin de drie tentoonstellingen en het artistiek onderzoek uitgebreid worden belicht.
